[DUG] Software updaters

Message bodyEvery developer/package seems to write their own – I am wondering if there are any packages out there for a software provider to use to do simple tasks like:
  a.. Get started from time to time to check a web site to see if updated files are present
  b.. Which URL and which file(s) to check configurable by programmer
  c.. If update found, downloads file and processes it – may be unzipping and/or running an installer
  d.. reports back to web site or via email or log file that an update was processed.
Nothing too complex, and was planning to write a simple such updater, but if there is something already respectable out there – what do others do?
