[DUG] Reporting Engines

We use Report Builder too for all our complex reports such as quotes, work orders, invoices, fabrication, installation reports, etc. With our software these tend to have multiple drawings and sub reports. Once you know what you are doing Report Builder does a good job of these but it has its quirks which will have you tearing your hair out until you learn them. As Paul Hectors said it is a fair call that it doesn’t give you much feedback on what is wrong when things aren’t working and until you know the quirks that could be quite often…
For simple list style reports we tends to use forms/frames based around DevExpress grids instead and then use the DevExpress reporting engine to print these grids – the user can easily customise the columns, filtering, summaries, etc of the grid until it has exactly the data they require and then print the result which seems simpler and more flexible than Report Builder. Of course there is no way we could do any of our complex reports with the DevExpress report engine.
Cheers,
David.

Actually, I found reportbuilder to have been the best reporting engines I have ever used.
It has been especially useful for even those really difficult, single page, report everything, several reports on the single page, color & graphs, reports that had to go out every month.

Hi Alister,
I am sorry but I do not share Tony’s confidence in ReportBuilder.
We use ReportBuilder for Delphi 2007 at PowerShield. Support is very good, the product is average. It has a number of quirks that had to be compensated for. One of the things I dislike is the lack of information it provides when you do something wrong.
I am not sure if I would select ReportBuilder again.
Best regards,
Paul

We are looking at report engines in Delphi and was wondering if any DUG members would like to comment. Currently we are leaning towards FastReports - what are other members using, and are they happy?
