I wouldn't describe myself as a 'fan' but when I started using it (about
v3) there was nothing to compare with it as a way of doing
ad-hoc graphical reports on PC databases, which I why I chose it to
integrate in my delphi apps.
It was as revolutionary to us for reporting, It avoided "export to
excel" reporting (yuck!)
Similarly in database support flexql (an SQL Query and UPDATE tool )
was an amazing development, It
meant we could carry around on on 1.44 Mb floppy the means to track down
and correct database corruptions.
You can slag it all you like but despite the best efforts to destroy
itself its still a powerful report writer, the worst
thing was always the company itself (crystal, seagate, crystal
decision, business obj & now Sap)
The only thing near to it is cognos which never really reached the PC Space
I tried recently to have a play the MS SQL Reporting Services and guess
what, I
had to install IIS (I use Apache) at which point I gave up and went back
to CR
