Sorry Ross but my understanding is that this does break all the rules !

You cannot write data into program files\.  This includes your data sub 
dir.  You should be using the users app data dir.  You are right and 
wrong about common app data.  It is not difficult to use but it also 
wont work under Vista.  Users have read access to common app data but 
not right access.  So if your app needs to write settings it will have 
to run as admin.

Your testing may not show this up as 'virtualization' can hide these 
issues from you (sometimes??).
