[DUG] Delphi 2006 snippet

Hi Robert,

But you don't have a single person whose sole job it is to fix problems
- the Delphi team fix bugs as well as design new features, just like a
normal team. I think this is the first time they have allocated someone
specifically to fixing bugs _only_ - it being such a feature rich
product that people discover all sorts of stuff, the person is being
allocated from the start to deal with issues.

InterBase has had a 7.0, 7.1 and 7.5 release, the release versions
indicate new functionality rather than bug fixes. There haven't been a
.2, .3 or .4 release of InterBase. And sure, IB has a few problems but
most of them have been pretty obscure or unusual. We have one customer
doing 7 million transactions per day on InterBase (yes, in NZ) and their
only problem is that IB (and firebird as well has this problem as I
understand) has a total final transaction limit based on signed-32 bits.
Once they get to 2 billion transactions, they're toast, the number
doesn't wrap. IMHO, the firebird team have stagnated - sitting down and
re-writing the entire engine again in C++ and then forking it 4 times,
well... I'm Borland I suppose I should be biased :-)

Hi Richard

Interesting point. After talking with the guys here we think we
actually spend more time on product refinement (bug fixes, usability and
performance) than new features !

While new features tend to get you new clients, they don't keep your
existing client base happy!

It's an interesting balance that needs to be maintained. I am glad to
see Borland re focus on product quality, In the Firebird / Interbase
arena I note the Firebird people point to them providing a stable
product over the new features in Interbase 7.0, 7.1, 7.2, 7.3, 7.4, 7.5
!

I am sure this will work well for Borland.

I only asked about the # of developers to ascertain the ratio of bugs to
features. There probably isn't much point to having 1 bug fixer and 200
'new feature' developers!
