we had reduced our shortlist to Clickatell, but the prices they
quoted were higher (9c for NZ and 6c for Oz). So we will get back

Hi all,
I use Clickatell and have done for many years. The interface is
reasonably simple and includes a number of APIs, including HTTP, FTP,
SMTP, SMPP, COM, XML, SOAP, and REST.
They work on a credit system - you buy a number of credits (between 400
and 500,000 at a time) at about $NZ0.073 per credit (at the moment, but
subject to exchange rates). The price decreases if you purchase 10,000
or more credits at a once, down to $NZ0.057 per credit for 250,000 or
more in one purchase. If you setup a bundle (automatic top up of
message credit balance every month), you can get a discount (currently 11%).
Sending to VFNZ/2Degrees is 0.8 credits and Spark is 3.0 credits - so
$0.059 to $0.22 per message (based on $0.073), depending on which
network you are sending to.
There is a Developer Central interface which includes summary and
detailed reports.
There are options for long numbers (India, Denmark, Netherlands, Sweden,
UK, Germany, Spain, Switzerland, USA, Australia) and shortcodes
(Namibia, South Africa, UK, and Canada) for receiving messages. For NZ
there is the option to use a Danish long number, which is supported by
Spark and VFNZ.
Received messages (via this NZ/Danish option) uses 0.3 credits per message.
You can use a variety of options for the "Sender" of the messages, but
all senders have to be registered with Clickatell (and you may need to
verify why you need/want to use a non-numeric sender).
I hope that helps! :D
Regards,
Bevan

<pre>I put this feature into one of my apps a couple of years ago and used
Essendex - based in Melbourne, and they are around Aus 10 cents a text.
I do an HTTP post to their server from memory.
Nobody has actually used it much yet but there is renewed interest so I'm
also looking at other provider options. A couple of months ago I came up
with this short list but haven't done anything further:
smsglobal 13c
twilio 8c
clickatell 5.7c

We are using Message Media to send texts from our applications. But
they are very expensive. What are other people using ?
