<DIV><FONT face=Verdana>Ok, here goes my answers -</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Verdana></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Verdana><STRONG>Q1</STRONG> - Put three on each side -
if they are the same then the heavy ball is one of the remaining balls so
you compare them to find the heavy ball; if the first weighing is uneven you
take the heavy group and weigh two of them against each other - if they are the
same the third ball is the heavy one, if they are uneven you have the heavy ball
on the scales. BTW, this has been posed before, I'm sure, and you can do
this with up to nine balls. It gets more interesting when you don't know
whether the odd one out is heavier or lighter.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Verdana></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Verdana><STRONG>Q2</STRONG> - Everyone who votes yes gets an
equal share. Watch those hands go up . . .</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Verdana>Or, I get a third share, the first crewman to vote yes
gets half of what's left (ie a third share), the next yes vote gets half of
what's left (ie a sixth share) etc. Now watch those hands go up!
This could provoke a few fights, though, which might reduce the pool of
potential winners - depends if you need the whole crew afterwards or can get by
with a skeleton crew (NPI).</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Verdana></FONT> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=Verdana><STRONG>Q3</STRONG> - All the women nod their heads
because they already knew this - they all know there are at least 99 unfaithful
men in the village. All the men look sheepish because they all know
there's at least one unfaithful husband. None of the women know for sure
whether their own husbands have been unfaithful but they have to
be wondering so after nodding they all give their own husbands a very sharp
look.</FONT></DIV>

<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: MS Sans Serif">This is usually for the Off topic

<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: MS Sans Serif">So here goes ... here are some
questions from a well known company ... but don't cheat and search online
...try and think them through.</SPAN>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: MS Sans Serif"><B>Question 1</B></SPAN>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: MS Sans Serif">You have eight balls all of the
same size. Seven of them weigh the same. One of them weighs slightly more. How
can you find the heavier ball by using a balance and only two
weighings?</SPAN>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: MS Sans Serif"><B>Question 2</B></SPAN>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: MS Sans Serif">Youre a pirate ship captain, and
your crew gets to vote on how the gold is divided. If fewer than half the
pirates agree with you, you die. How do you recommend apportioning the gold in
such a way that you get a good share of the booty, but still survive?</SPAN>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: MS Sans Serif"><B>Question 3</B></SPAN>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: MS Sans Serif">Every man in a village of 100
married couples has cheated on his wife. Every wife in the village instantly
knows when a man other than her husband has cheated, but does not know when
her own husband has. The village has a law that does not allow for adultery.
Any wife who can prove that her husband is unfaithful must kill him that very
day. The women of the village would never disobey this law. One day, the queen
of the village visits and announces that at least one husband has been
unfaithful. What happens?</SPAN>
<P><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: MS Sans Serif">Have a great weekend ... long one
for the Auckland bods.</SPAN>
