I put this feature into one of my apps a couple of years ago and used
Essendex - based in Melbourne, and they are around Aus 10 cents a text.
I do an HTTP post to their server from memory.

Nobody has actually used it much yet but there is renewed interest so I'm
also looking at other provider options. A couple of months ago I came up
with this short list but haven't done anything further:

smsglobal 13c
twilio 8c
clickatell 5.7c
