Thanks everyone. 

You've given me a lot to consider. I like Rohit's implementation but still considering the impacts of ALTER TABLE.

Rohit's does have that open ended ability, especially considering adding such things as extra table lookups and other thoughts. 

Gotta keep it simple (oops, too late).
