Thanks all,
All those suggestions are good. I've used Flamerobin and others before and even wrote my own DB tool once. However I've settled for a little relatively cheap tool that can so far do what I want. http://www.tmssoftware.com/site/tmsdm.asp

Flamerobin (Sourceforge) lightweight and based on functionality of MS SQL Studio, and EMS even in the Lite free version has lots of features – eg running parameterised queries, extracting DDL, scripts and edits with commit and rollback, running stored procedures etc. Both can show SQL execution details and index stats. Flamerobin is cross platform, EMS Windows only I think.
