On the other hand - it looks like the same test program uses a lot less 
memory than the old D2007 version.    The figures vary wildly depending on 
whether using Task Manager or Process Explorer or Resource Monitor, and 
which memory measure to take - but in the region of the D2007 program uses 
3.8MB memory, and the the XE2 version uses 2MB.

Its a rare thing when a program uses less memory.

Windows Live Mail is a good example (default free mail program with Windows 
7, and pretty good in the main) - according to Process Explorer it is .Net 
and uses around 250-400MB memory.   Firefox is using around 400MB - but then 
I do have over 400 tabs open...  BDS.exe (XE2) uses  160MB at present.

XE2 help clearly says the defaut is false, and that's the case for the three 
projects I'm
working on at present. So the bloat that John reports must come from other 
factors.

I think it must be related to the Unicode (or similar) changes as, for my 
apps at least, the big
increment - about 70% - came in the shift from D2007 to D2010.

Even so, there was a noticeable (20%) jump between D2010 and XE2.
