Flickr?

The advanced search there will let you search for images tagged with “bird”, and which have a Creative Commons license allowing Commercial use:

http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=bird&m=tags&l=comm&ss=0&ct=0&mt=photos&w=all&adv=1

Gives me around 119,000 results…

Sure you could enhance the search to return more specifically NZ birds.

Depending on the license, you might have to provide attribution to any images you use, but putting that sort of attribution in your About box or similar would be fine.

Subject: [DUG] Finding images for programs

Because of my name I tend to decorate some screens of my programs with images of NZ birds.

While it is easy to find images on the web via Google Image search, finding images that I can use without worry of copyright is not so easy.

If I can I find the original photographer and ask permission, professional photographers or artists tend to say “No”, those without fancy websites are almost impossible to contact and are more likely to not mind. (eg travellers blogs etc).

Some photos are marked as Wikimedia Commons, which means should be fine.

The irony is that Google Image search allows one to now upload a picture and find the matches on the web, excellent for finding the original site for it (I have noticed a lot of these images appearing elsewhere as well without credit as to their origin).

What do others do to find art or images?
