Subject: Re: [DUG] Company closing
I never forget when arriving here in NZ 11 years ago, I applied for a job at Jade through an employment agency. I had 13 years of commercial programming experience with 5 staff. I did not get past the first interview as I did not know Jade. Later I was speaking to a lecturer in computing and his comment was, 6 months on Jade training and I would have been away. 13 year of practical experience takes 13 years to learn.
If it's any consolation, I'm not sure you missed too much - I used to work for Jade, and spent a year in the Jade Development Team, working on Jade itself. When I first went there is was a great place to work, but it gradually went downhill as the easy money from Unisys dried up. I left there 14 years ago, when it was an unhappy place, but I have been told that more recently (in the last couple of years) it has picked up again as a place to work.
If you had commercial development experience, a bit of Windows (and, dare I say it, Delphi) then Jade would have been a no-brainer.
When we last hired a developer (about 4 years ago), we carefully did not mention that we used Delphi, just that we were looking for a senior software developer. We hired a guy with 10 years embedded experience, never seen Delphi before, not done much with Windows before - one of the best hires we've ever made. Just a pity we're now all redundant.
Cheers,
Alistair Ward.
