We need to keep the competition, but in a way that technical excellence
wins. Like most I got frustrated with the VHS vs Beta outcome ... but then
again along came DVD's some time later. 

I am completely at a loss to envisage what sort of competition you have in
mind that allows two technologies to compete but which at the point at which
one of those looks to become the "winner" is then subjected to some sort of
"technical excellence" test in order to determine whether it should be
allowed to continue.

Freedom is a liberty many have died for in the past, and it applies as much
to technology as to politics. 

Oh puh-lease.  Not only is this emotive nonsense, but it completely flies in
the face of what you previously said.

You can't prosthelytise freedom on the one hand and then call for a limited
or restricted form of competition on the other.
