[DUG] Google Phone

Out of curiosity I did a quick comparison with Vodafone UK. The HTC Magic
handset over there is "free" on ALL plans, but the plans start at 25
GBP/mth. This is comparable to (only slightly better specified than) the
$60/mth plan here. At current forex rate, 25 GBP is approx NZ$55, so the
price is quite comparable too.

The handset cost on a $60/mth plan in NZ is only $220.

Given the vast difference in economies of scale between the UK and NZ
markets, I personally don't consider this to be all that "inflated", merely
what you might reasonably expect (and possibly better than you might expect)
given that NZ has 1/15th the population yet with a very comparable
geographic area (and in some respects more challenging topography).
(Population density: 16/km2 vs 246/km2).

I agree. The retail price of the phone itself is heavily inflated in the NZ
market. Its always been the case of a supply and demand pricing.. Small cool
form factor always creates a ripoff.. When people are willing to carry a
netbook in their pocket and hold it to their ears for a 20 minute talk I
think we will see the iphone price drop to be competitive :)

These phones sells more than a net book which is around NZ$500. I would
consider these phones another rip off.

The 1st gen android phones aren't worth getting and the second gen ones are
still not as good as the completion. The 3g ones are though. You can get a
nexus 1 for $870NZ from http://www.expansys.co.nz/d.aspx?i=193939 and a
droid/milestone from http://www.expansys.co.nz/d.aspx?i=192413.

Personally, I dumped the iPhone for a windows mobile phone, the HD2 which
has better hardware than both (http://www.expansys.co.nz/d.aspx?i=188954 ).
It'll have android running on it in a couple of months.
