[DUG] Where am I in a file (dbf)

I have two files. The second file is linked to the first. I'm trying to check if I am on a valid record when I open the second file. If I'm on a valid record, I return the correct record number with recno.  If not I get 21474836. Where does this number come from?  The problem is that if I try and read an "invalid" record I get "Invalid variant type conversion." Is there a better way to find out if I am on a valid record?
