(Here we go with another optimistic post... maybe this one will make

IMHO as soon as FB branched from IB6 it was really wishful thinking to
expect that the IB driver (and it was always IB only) would always
work with FB. In our case we were kind of forced into Firebird as it
fixed some critical issues of ours. It's been good to us though; I
don't regret the move and there is no possibility of IB and FB ever
becoming one again so you do have to choose and there's no point in
bemoaning the differences. It would be nice if there was a free FB
driver, but I suspect the only way that would happen is if FB
dominated a lot more of the market share. In the meantime we use the
Upscene driver. It's obviously profitable enough for them to maintain
it....
