I solved the debugger problem.  There was an invalid path setting in the

.dproj file, but not one I could see with any of the project options.  I
had 
to edit it manually to see it.

My version of D2007 installed is V 11.0.2804.9245

It was a copy of the installation DVD I had with files dated Jul/Aug
2007 - 
so it is one of the updates.   I went to the website to check for more 
updates but cannot figure which are from which dates, and how these
relate 
to the versions I have - can anyone tell me what updates were from what 
dates?
