David,
Delphi 7 is a big improvement on Delphi 5 and has been a stable
environment for many years. Delphi 2007 is what I consider as the
first release since then that is worth moving from D7.
However, you are right. There are little nigglies of "I used to .. and
now it doesn't.." issues that invariably come with moving to a newer
system. But as Rohit has pointed out, there are also some rea issues
in some areas of D2007 that can be cause for concern.
As you will know, there are several large issues with Delphi 5 that
you have all probably forgotten as you have found various ways around
them that has by now become second nature. I know I've forgotten what
they were. As D2007 was only released a few months ago, we are still
working to find our way around them.
The two main issue that I have with D2007 is the help system, and the
PageControl issue.
The Help system - the only way I can live with D2007 is to have a D7
help file on the computer and refer to that help instead of pressing
F1. A pain? Yes. Stops me working with D2007? No.
PageControl - this issue means that I have to ensure that I always
compile with the current page on any page but the one I want to
display when the program starts. Changing pages in code seems to
negate this issue (tab appears blank if you have many tabs and some
hidden, but controls reappear when user selects another tab and
returns). Not everyone experiences this issue but it is a real and
every day issue here. A pain? Yes. Stops me working with D2007? No.
Rohit has given us a few more that he has found, and some workaround for these.
It is still in my opinion well worth the upgrade to D2007, but if you
didn't go from D5 to D7, I'd love to know why not.
