If you're thinking of changing, I can very strongly recommend taking the
plunge and forking out a small amount to get your own domain name. Even
if you don't use it to set up a website, at the very least you've got
your own domain for mail.
After that, you've got separation from ISPs. You can change whenever
you like, with no impact on your email address.
I think you can even use Google Mail for Domains (?) to look after the
email for your new domain name, meaning that all you need from any ISP
is a connection to the internet; you're not bound to their mail servers
or anything else.
For example, I got my own domain name about 6 years ago, and in the
meantime moved from the UK to NZ. However, the email address that I
give out hasn't changed in the slightest, even though the ISP hosting it
underneath has obviously changed.
Seriously, for a few dollars to register your own domain, I can't
recommend it strongly enough. Also means, if you like, you can let
family members have their own email address on your new domain, thereby
also prising them from the grip of their ISPs...

P.S. I use Kiwihosting.net.nz for hosting my domain and thus email as
well. Fast friendly service. I use TelstraClear (mostly because I'm
fortunate enough to be in their cable broadband area) purely for a
connection to the internet, nothing else.

Any recommendations for other ISPs? I intend to ditch Xtra this week.
