Oops ... seems I have been describing it incorrectly. What I see in your
previous email should apparently be called a "lowercase beta" and is this
character: http://www.fileformat.info/info/unicode/char/00df/index.htm

So, the character has been sent as one unicode character but received as
another, apparently converted by my mail client because it realised the
correct character would not be displayed on my system.

However, my point that even correctly-coded unicode is not necessarily
displayed correctly but depends on the displaying system is irrelevant if
you've now found something that works - presumably because it controls the
display process as well as the encoding.
