Its a good point Kurt, in two years time, if an organisation wants to
receive bulk mail discount privileges they will have to have the post codes
"correct"   - hence the min yearly $1000 fee to get the data to get them
right (and effective loss of discount?). If not (2008 forward) they say your
mail could go all over the country until it eventually gets to its
destination. Alternatively they will be obliged to an expensive third party
solution.

I am very surprised that there was not a wider and more transparent public
consultation over this radical move, still State Owned, —once would have
been the stuff of Select  Committee hearings in the Hive.

Heaps of businesses use the data to keep their mail outs and other
information lined up with NZ Post areas by post code. The new changes are
radical in many areas.

NZ POST already has a bevy of selected developers who will be recommended to
be sent out for a fee to "fix" people's existing databases.

What used to happen was that they let any one download the updates to the
database, they were csv from memory.

Any database set up to process these could be used, and NZ POST also used to
hand across the counter a free CDROM with an application on it.

Hopefully some enterprising DUGers will be able to do something - pay the
$3000 commercial yearly fee, obtain the data (with quarterly updates!) and
make a reasonably priced  application for it - perhaps put COM in so that
other applications can query it *indirectly*. (Under the proposed terns the
data will need to be incorporated in such a way that only the "application"
can access it - directly).

Not for me to do unfortunately.

But would help medium and small NZ businesses extremely.
