I just checked and I actually have TBX version 2.2 Alpha (latest) and
Toolbar 2000 2.1.8 (not latest).

You can certainly get it to work with a little patience.

I currently have the latest TBX working with the latest Toolbar 2000,
but it took an hour or so of hacking.

TBX includes a Diff file and a utility to apply the Diff to the Toolbar
2000. This will work flawlessly with 2.1.6. You can do it to any later
version but it will not work instantly. It does produce an error file
that tells you what it couldn't do which you can then work through to
fix it up.

By that, do you mean TBX is *not* compatible with the newer Toolbar 2000
2.2.0, or that it is compatible with 2.1.6 or later. (Of course, if
you're prudently staying with 2.1.6 you may not know for sure.
Alas, Alex's website notes don't make it clear either).
