[DUG] who still uses .gdb files?

Richard,
I knew about the slowness of the gdb extension on the XP, but did not know
the cause.
All my apps support whatever extension you want. None of our users have
the databas eon the XP, so its never been an issue for them. I had a quick
look at IBVIEW, but I cant spot it except for the browse button for
Registering a Database. I can remove gdb but then there is no default
extension. Maybe I can use gdb, fdb and idb. Where else does it default to
gdb ?

I agree :-)
All my databases are called .ib - and all the ones created by IB are .ib by
default from 7.0 onwards. I have just noticed that some utilities (e.g. Rohits
one?) that .gdb is the standard suffix.

Well, that´s old news and really odd fix. Not using gdb is really a much
easier fix. Interbase doesn´t care what the file is called. Just name it idb for
interbase database and there is no problem at all

Came across this:
Performance issue with Windows ME/XP
This issue was raised during the release of InterBase 7.0. If you have
renamed your databases to have an extension other than ".gdb" or if
none of your databases are on Windows platforms, you can ignore
this section.
Microsoft has implemented a backup and restore utility called System
Restore. This utility automatically backs up files that have certain
extensions whenever they are touched. The old default InterBase file
extension 'GDB' is on this list, which means that databases that have
names ending in ".gdb" get backed up extremely frequently when they
are in use. This is causing performance problems on Windows ME
and XP systems.
