[DUG] Bank acc No's

I opened my cheque account at 17 years of age, there was a folder with
sheets of available bank account numbers(continuous). Some of those numbers
are still in use. (May be with some trading banks they reissued that kind of
account number later?)
 But how does a checksum algorithim cover those older numbers today?
