[DUG] Delphi 2006 snippet

I acutally find the software assurance resonable. We use the Architect
Version, and given that Borland release a new version about every 18
months, and the Software assurance is a third of the cost of the full
version, then you are getting 3 complete release for the cost of 2.

It's not exactly a Borland invention. Microsoft do exactly the same
thing - you don't get the right to cheap upgrades to new versions,
instead you have to buy the right to get new versions for a certain
period of time.

In general I actually agree with you Kyley but it's a problem with the
whole industry. I think it's come about because people were seeing less
reason to upgrade to the latest versions of software. I mean really
Office 2003 doesn't offer much more useful functionality than Office XP
or Office 2000 or even Office 97 did. So people have realised they don't
need to upgrade every release and in response companies like Microsoft
decided to get even by removing the discount for upgrading if you
already have the product.

At least we can be thankful that Borland do still have upgrade pricing
for their products.

David.

It is an extra fee that states that you will get the bug fixes in new
versions without paying upgrades. so it means you are paying for an
upgrade before you want or expect it.

Consumer affairs could have a field day with that.

Advertise a product for a fee and you are supposed to get that product
Fit for purpose. The Software assurance scheme when you think about it
is actually a promise buy the vendor that you will not get what is
advertised.
