Richard/Paul/Max
The Profax/Accredo story reminds me of Bristol making cars, it was said
that they wouldn't buy in a component for 5 pounds if they could make it
for 20, I've seen 2 Bristols on the road in my life.
I admire there UI philosophy (If we don't like it we rewrite it ) but
can't agree with much else in the product. Which leads me to think
(somewhat vaguely related)
1/ If Delphi is OO and encapsulated then why do some of us insist on
ignoring that at a macro level (and reinventing things)
2/ We use Delphi because it is the "Best of breed" dev tool, but why do
so many use Interbase/Firebird. which even the most deluded of us
couldn't say is in the same echelon (Richard excluded, he's paid to be
deluded)
3/ MySQL (and MYOB) offer a salient lesson here, neither product is
technically excellent but both are relatively ubiquitous, why? simply
because the decision to use them was not made by people with the
skill/experiance/knowledge to know better (Web Hackers and Accountants)
But the numbers count.
4/ Finally I'm dying to see how Paul et al does the DB independance with
triggers and stored procs trick, intellectually because it is enormously
difficult and fraught with danger, and philosophically because its
relatively pointless. Pragmatically you would choose MSSQL, With my
pathological hatred of M$ you would chuck in (select 1 from the
following list), PostgeSQL, My(Max)SQL, Firebird even 2 db's would drive
most dev's to distraction not only in static considerations
(functionality, stored proc script language, trigger syntax, ddl...) but
as you will find out the dynamic performance can vary considerably
executing 2 identical scripts on the same data....

Laugh of the Day, M$ are taking on their browser competition with IE7,
unfortunately you need XP with SP2 to run it
